A beautiful example of rough Gem Silica! Gem Silica, at it's core, is a chalcedony that has come into copper associated materials such as Chrysocolla, which is how it obtains it's deep, rich blue color. It is, however, quite hard, having a mohs hardness rating of 7, which means it is suitable for lapidary work and being turned into gemstones. It is very much a rare material and seldom seen in jewelry. This is a natural and untreated piece of Gem Silica, as there are many imposters that dye colorless chalcedony. A gem silica gemstone is indeed a rare material! Light passes through it at it's outer edges, giving it a glowing blue hue.
