A lovely polished piece of Jadeite. One of two distinct minerals commonly known as jade, jadeite is the rarer and harder variety. Rich green jadeite, known as “imperial jade,” is also the most highly valued. The Chinese especially valued jadeite and have used the gemstone for multiple purposes. Jadeite occurs only in metamorphic rocks, most often in those that have been subjected to the high pressures deep below the Earth's surface. Jadeite is rare; its presence at the surface indicates great uplift of earlier buried regions and great amounts of erosion.
